Ready, Set, Rehearse: Introducing 911Cellular’s New Drill and Test Modes

Running regular safety drills isn't just best practice. Increasingly, it’s the law. Whether you are managing a hospital campus keeping up with The Joint Commission and OSHA’s workplace violence prevention standards, a K-12 school district aligning with Alyssa’s Law, or a university maintaining Clery Act compliance, regular crisis simulations are a mandatory part of operations.

But orchestrating a full-scale active shooter, violent patient, or weather emergency drill can feel like a high-wire act. Security teams need a way to run realistic, compliance-mapped simulations without disrupting day-to-day operations or accidentally triggering live emergency services.

Our goal is to make regulatory compliance and team readiness entirely stress-free. That is why we are thrilled to launch our new Drill Mode and Test Mode features. Complete with a dedicated dashboard, advanced analytics, and automated compliance tracking, this update provides a risk-free environment for training your team, satisfying auditors, and perfecting your platform.

The Tailored Approach: Drill Mode vs. Test Mode

Not every system adjustment requires the same level of feedback. Sometimes you want to see exactly how your dispatch team responds to a simulated workflow; other times, you just want to make sure a physical panic button in a newly renovated wing is communicating perfectly with the network. To give you total flexibility—while keeping these active sessions highly visible to all impacted teams—we have split these functionalities into two distinct modes.

1. Drill Mode: The Full Dress Rehearsal

Drill Mode is designed to mimic a real-world emergency as closely as possible. When Drill Mode is active, the system fires off emergency response team notifications and triggers standard workflows.

The safeguard? Every single communication, whether it appears on a screen or via an alert, is automatically appended with a "drill" badge or prefix. This ensures your team gets realistic, hands-on practice while making it abundantly clear to everyone involved that it’s an exercise.

2. Test Mode: The Quiet Connection Check

If you are doing routine maintenance or onboarding new hardware, you don’t need notifications flying out to your response teams. That’s where Test Mode comes in.

Test Mode is a completely non-intrusive option that silently verifies the connection between your physical panic buttons and our system. Instead of routing alerts to the primary emergency interface, panics are sent to a dedicated, isolated testing interface visible only to administrators and authorized dispatchers. Every incident here is cleanly marked with a "test" badge, ensuring your day-to-day operations remain entirely undisturbed.

Inside the Dashboard: Seamless Command and Control

We’ve built these features directly into your workflow. Administrators can access the new capabilities through the Drills and Testing Dashboard in the left navigation bar.

Setting up a simulation within the 911Cellular Safety Platform is fast and easy:

  1. Select your target security zone (choosing the root zone applies the mode to your entire organization).
  2. Give the drill or test a clear name.
  3. Set a specific duration.

Once you hit launch, the system handles the rest. To prevent any dispatcher confusion, the navigation bar will flash, and a prominent warning banner will appear across the emergency calls dashboard to notify on-duty dispatchers that a drill or test is actively running.

When the configured duration expires, the drill ends automatically, clearing all visual indicators and safely returning your security zones to normal operation. Need to cut it short? Administrators can manually end a session at any time with a single click.

Analytics and Compliance Tracking Made Easy

Safety isn't just about running the drill; it’s about proving you did it. Security audits and organizational compliance mandates often require strict annual testing cycles.

To help you keep up, we’ve introduced a new Compliance Configuration tool. Within the dashboard, you can set your exact testing targets (for example, requiring two tests per year) against a specific start date. The system will review your history retroactively to determine whether your targets have been met.

Additionally, our new Drill Analytics Tiles give you immediate access to:

  • Total drill and test counts over time.
  • Granular usage metrics.
  • Zone coverage percentages (so you can see exactly which campus buildings or sectors haven't practiced lately).

All activations are cleanly assigned to their respective sessions, allowing you to export clean data reports for effortless documentation and compliance audits.
