Challenge

Jamestown Regional Medical Center's (JRMC) hospital previously relied on hardwired wall mounts and fixed panic buttons, limiting staff access to assistance when moving throughout the hospital. Frequent accidental activations led to alarm fatigue with local law enforcement, with some response times reaching 30 minutes. At the same time, limited incident reporting reduced leadership’s visibility into workplace safety concerns, while staff safety sentiment scores highlighted opportunities to strengthen JRMC’s overall safety culture.

Results

Following implementation of the 911Cellular Safety Platform, alongside staff education and broader workplace safety efforts, JRMC quickly exceeded its culture-of-safety and nurse-safeguarding benchmarks. Incident reporting also increased, providing greater visibility into workplace safety concerns, while upgraded hardware minimized accidental activations, limiting false alarms and strengthening local law enforcement partnerships with greatly reduced response times.

About Jamestown Regional Medical Center

Jamestown Regional Medical Center (JRMC) is an independent, nonprofit healthcare organization serving Jamestown and the surrounding region. JRMC provides care both within the hospital and throughout the community, including emergency care, specialty care and Home Health and Hospice services. Guided by a commitment to innovation and continuous improvement, JRMC invests in technology that enhances patient care while creating a safer environment for the team members who deliver it every day.

The Challenge

JRMC’s leadership recognized opportunities to strengthen workplace safety and better support team members throughout the hospital. Existing security tools created operational challenges that limited mobility, contributed to unnecessary alarms and reduced visibility into safety concerns. To better protect staff and continue delivering exceptional patient care, JRMC sought a more modern, responsive safety solution.

  • Stationary duress solutions limited staff’s ability to quickly request assistance when moving throughout the facility, particularly during unpredictable patient interactions.

  • Community-based Home Health and Hospice employees faced additional safety considerations while providing care outside the hospital where traditional tools were not available.

  • Frequent false alarms — averaging four per month —contributed to alarm fatigue and created unnecessary strain on partnerships with local law enforcement.

  • Limited incident reporting reduced leadership's operational visibility into workplace safety concerns, resulting in only 13 annual logs despite routine safety events.

  • Middling safety scores of 3.75 for safety culture and 3.13 for nurse safeguarding posed a risk to retaining and attracting top clinical talent.

The Approach

JRMC approached workplace safety as an investment in its people rather than simply a regulatory requirement. Any upgrades needed to deliver measurable improvements to staff peace of mind and daily environmental protection. Besides internal trial goals, the WSI Safety Technology Grant funding the deployment set clear, data-driven performance targets:

JRMC-Approach_Nursing Staff Treating Patient

  • Technology is intuitive and easy for staff to use from anywhere during an emergency.

  • Establish a tool for staff providing care in the community through Home Health and Hospice services.

  • Reduce accidental activations contributing to alarm fatigue.

  • Reach a culture-of-safety score of 4.13+.

  • Achieve a nurse-safeguarding score of 3.44+.

The Solution

JRMC replaced its outdated safety solutions with the 911Cellular Safety Platform. A key part of the deployment was distributing Alert BadgeR+ to mobile frontline caregivers in high-risk environments, providing them with wearable, always-accessible protection. The deployment also extended beyond the hospital walls, outfitting Home Health and Hospice team members with Bluetooth safety badges while they provide care in patients’ homes and throughout the community. Additionally, the platform provides the JRMC team with:

  • Incident-Based Alerting: Staff discreetly double-press the Alert BadgeR+ for general assistance, or press and hold for immediate help with a combative patient.

  • Automated Tiered Routing: General assistance alerts trigger screen takeover emergency notifications for nearby staff and notify internal security via app, text, or call, while high-priority emergencies also dispatch local 911.

  • Centralized Dashboard Monitoring: Pushes critical details—including the activator's name and contact information, incident type, and precise room- or floor-level location—to security screens within seconds, enhancing situational awareness.

  • Automated Safety Reporting: Generates automatic summaries upon archiving an incident and tracks high-level safety trends; alongside other reporting software, this provides leadership with the operational visibility needed to drive long-term safety improvements.

The Results

Following the implementation of the 911Cellular Safety Platform, JRMC saw measurable improvements in several key workplace safety metrics. The technology was one component of JRMC’s broader safety efforts, which also included staff education, leadership engagement and strengthened reporting processes, allowing JRMC to meet and exceed its core safety benchmarks within the first full quarter of implementation.

These data points reflect practical, day-to-day improvements in JRMC’s operations and workplace environment.

Growth in culture-of-s
afety and nurse-safeguarding metrics shows that frontline teams feel protected and supported, creating a proactive security culture that helps stabilize the workforce and makes physical safety a distinct advantage for recruitment and retention. Additionally, increased documentation demonstrates that staff are actively reporting security concerns, providing leadership with greater visibility into safety events and opportunities for continued improvements. False alarms also decreased following implementation of the new technology, helping reduce unnecessary activations and support coordination with local law enforcement.

Together, the 911Cellular Safety Platform and JRMC’s continued education and ongoing focus on workplace safety have provided additional tools and information to identify concerns, respond appropriately and continue building a safer environment for team members and patients.
