Recently introduced in the New York State Legislature, Assembly Bill A7833 is a game changer, mandating that social service agencies equip their employees with wearable or mobile phone-based panic buttons that allow them to quickly and discreetly call for help. While the bill is still a long way from becoming a law, its introduction in the state senate is a pivotal step toward safeguarding our country’s social workers and recognizing the sacrifices these professionals make daily to provide invaluable services necessary to protect the nation’s most vulnerable populations.
A Bill That Puts Safety First
Assembly Bill A7833 was introduced on April 11, 2025, and aims to protect state social service employees interacting with clients in external settings like private homes, childcare centers, hospitals, schools and community spaces.
Under the proposed law:
- Workers would receive wearable panic buttons or employer-issued phones with mobile panic button software installed.
- These panic buttons must connect directly to 9-1-1 and immediately transmit the user’s location to dispatchers.
- Employers cannot use the technology to track workers unless the panic button is activated.
- Employers will fully fund devices.
The bill reflects a growing recognition of the dangers faced by social service professionals and a commitment to workplace violence prevention.
